4) 400 word interview:

Today, we had a conversation with Luna Habte, a young, up-and-coming R&B star whose most recent album, Timeless, has been causing a stir in the music industry. We've had a conversation with her about her creative process, sources of inspiration, and future plans whilst also discussing the elements of her hit song “Nobody Gets Me”.

Interviewer: “Let’s start with your latest project. What was the inspiration behind it?”

Artist: The inspiration for this song was quite personal. I was thinking back on one of those relationships that stays with you for years after it ends: past love. I discovered myself revisiting past memories and reflecting on what worked and what didn't. Rather than resting with those emotions, I scooped them up and began writing. The music seemed to come naturally to me as if my emotions were guiding me. Although the song is mournful, it seems as though everyone can identify with the emotion of reflecting on a relationship that influenced them.

Interviewer: “How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?”

Artist: My sound is a blend of smooth and soulful R&B with a touch of nostalgia. I enjoy writing music that is emotional and sincere, almost like a conversation. Whilst love is a common theme in most of my songs, I like to not only think back to the positive aspects but the negative as well. R&B has always been about storytelling and preserving the memories that stick. By creating this song, I hope to resonate with my audience to allow them to transport back to a particular period of their life where they are with that one love they can not let go of.

Interviewer: “What’s been your most memorable live performance so far?”

Artist: The crowd’s state just clicked during one performance. I was wearing my Timberlands, which I wear when I want to feel grounded on stage, and I recall watching the audience as they danced slowly. The lyrics were heavy, as if the nostalgia were striking people in the moment. It was just one of those moments. After the performance, I was approached by someone who said the song brought back memories of their first relationship. That kind of interaction makes performing unforgettable.

Interviewer: “What advice would you give to up and coming musicians”

Artist: Remain loyal to your story and sound. It’s easy to follow trends but the artists that leave lasting impressions are the ones that bring out strong emotions from their audiences. Also, be patient. Music is a journey rather than a race and the people. Some of the best R&B songs are about love and just like love, building a music career takes time. Continue creating, be consistent and be vulnerable as that is what makes people connect.

We appreciate you taking time to tell us your stories. Love is perfectly expressed in your album. It’s evident that your lyrics bring nostalgia to life. We look forward to following your journey.

Statement of Intent

1) Once you have completed your print research and planning, go back to your statement of intent and make sure you have included the print brief in your final draft. Then, submit the final draft statement of intent to your teacher. The due date for this will be confirmed by your coursework teacher.

For my music video, the existing artist I will be using is R&B artist SZA. The song I have chosen is “Nobody Gets Me” and the original name will be Luna Habte. I plan on meeting the brief by aiming to make my music video 3 minutes long. I aim to use two locations, specifically an area with appealing scenery like a park. I will also include the location of a street, a bedroom, and multiple different clips that include scenic views.  For the majority of my video, I will be filming the scenes using medium shots whilst also using wide shot and close-up shots. I plan for the lighting to be quite natural e.g. from the sun and also fluorescent lighting. I will be challenging typical R&B stereotypes. I will be challenging typical R&B stereotypes of people wearing minimal clothes and flashy outgoing outfits by getting my actor to be casually dressed and in casual make-up since the vibe of my music video will be casual. This will also appeal to audiences as this may match their characteristics. One person will be the focus in the video, specifically a female. In an R&B music video, typically there is a large female representation as the star of the video. The social context behind this video is about failed relationships. If we apply Stuart Hall's Reception Theory to my video, I aim for the preferred reading to be for the audience to see the person's heartbreak reflected through the song and their actions. I aim to make my video relate to the Person Identity part of the Uses and Gratifications Theory by hoping audiences will see themselves reflected in the video. The target audience for this video is late teens to twenties. It is directed at people who have experienced heartbreak considering that is what the meaning behind the lyrics are. It is also targeted at people with an interest in the R&B genre. I believe viewers would enjoy the visuals and scenery of the video. When looking at Goodwin’s music video theory we can talk about how R&B music videos typically have a slow and steady rhythm. My video will reflect this typical convention. The potential record company that would promote my artist would be Sony Music and the brand identity for my artist would be for their audience to be able to relate to them in different ways. I would get my fans to engage with my artist by promoting the song and music video on different social media platforms.

The title for my music magazine will be “Vibe & Flow”. My double page spread feature will include an interview with the artist and an image of them. The additional page will include an image of the artist  and interview. For the cover image, I will use top lighting when editing so that the features of the artist will be pronounced. There won’t be any props in the pages. Only one person will be featured in the photos. I will use stereotypes in the music magazine by getting my model to dress in the typical R&B style to match the genre of the music video. Like my music video, the target audience for my magazine will be late teens to twenties. The audience may enjoy the magazine as it will show the ideas and the behind the scenes of what happened in the music video. It will also include an interview of the artist which allows audiences to get to know them better.
