COURSEWORK PRELIMINARY EXERCISE

1) State the  song  you have chosen for your preliminary exercise. - Nobody Gets Me - SZA 2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene. Summer Walker - Body - The camerawork is quite slow. - There are a lot of turns when moving the camera from scene to scene. - Black and white editing is used throughout the video. - She wears comfortable, silk clothing, has a calm facial expression. - She is the only person featured in the video. SZA - Good Days - A lot of contrapuntal sound is used. - Medium paced and fast paced cuts are used. - The camerawork is smooth and follows the person. - It switches from a regular camera to an old style filming camera. MEDIA AWARDS REVIEW

The Lurking Crow by Leila cinematography/camerawork : composition, framing, BCU, CU, MS, LS, pan, tilt, tracking shot, zoom -  Her camera placement was good and precise making it clear to watch. mise-en-scĂ©ne : clothing, props, gestures, facial expressions, sets, setting (CLAMPS) - This had the best Mise-en scene because it was in a natural comfortable setting so it had a comfortable feel to it. The actors were realistic and acted really good.  lighting : key light, back light, filler light; underlighting, top lighting, back lighting; low-key/high-key lighting - There was a lot of natural light used for the video from the house lights as well as natural lighting from the house. sound : diegetic/non-diegetic; on/off screen, sound bridge; parallel/contrapuntal sound, voiceover narration - This had the best sound design. When the girl was talking on the phone you could clearly hear the person on the other side. There was no background noise interrupting the audio. editing : continuity edi

COURSEWORK SUMMER PROJECT

1) Research: Music Videos Music Video 1: Narrative In Michael Jackson’s music video “Thriller” there is a narrative being played out in the first 4 minutes of the video. We can apply this narrative to Todorov’s narrative theory. At the beginning, there is a state of equilibrium with Michael and his girlfriend in the car. Then there is disequilibrium when they run out of gas and Michael transforms into a werewolf and the girlfriend is being chased. In the end there is new equilibrium when the camera switches to the cinema showing Michael and his girlfriend in the audience letting us know none of it was real.  Strauss’s theory of binary opposition is shown in the music video where we view the girlfriend as good and the werewolf and zombies as evil. It also can represent life versus death.  The Thriller music video makes allusions to the horror genre and horror films. the narrative could also be changing from child to adolescence.
